The intention of this project is a response to the need of skills development in South Africa. While illustrating that designing on a low budget and limited resources is not a constraint, but an opportunity. “South Africa is essentially a developing country in which financial, material and skilled labor resources are scarce” (Marschall & Kearney 2000:2). A possible solution to address the need of skills development in South Africa is by exploring principles such as; particularity design, self-build and how construction can be conceived as an educational tool through the use of didactic design to form a visual language.
The result of these findings suggest ways in which the principles can be derived from an architectural and construction profession and start to suggest how these methods can be applied into interior architecture (interior design) and their environments, as “interior architecture is never removed from the architectural condition” (Hildebrant 2005:02). The methods are starting to be applied by the use of specialized fabrication machinery, which is beginning to become readily accessible and available to the general public through educational centres such as MIT, FabLab and TechShop. Elements of the use of digital fabrication have been applied in predominately pavilion and furniture design and only recently in the design of interior spaces. Therefore the principles of digital fabrication, particularity design, self-build and didactic design can be combined and are starting to be combined together resulting in “developing a new approach to architectural design” (Marschall & Kearney 2000:2)
