  • Des Laubscher and Ingrid Templer attend the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers General Assembly and Conference in Chicago and gain full membership for South Africa at the federation
  • Tanja Lohr and Judith Hudson win the Dulux Innovation with Paint Award
  • Dianne Holtzer wins the Z Displays Exhibition Design Award
  • Des Laubscher becomes President of the Society of Designers in South Africa

  • Patricia Terry wins the Z Displays Exhibition Design Award
  • Ingrid Templer and Des Laubscher attend the International Conference on Quality Assurance in Higher Education in Montreal, Canada. Initial talks are held with a delegation from Nottingham Trent University at the conference to form a partnership with Greenside Design Center
  • Ingrid Templer presents a paper at the South African National Council for Illumination Biennial Conference entitled: “Working Together: A Dialogue between Lighting and Environmental Designers”

  • Denis Marokefalos wins the Z Display Exhibition Design Award
  • Ingrid Templer and Des Laubscher represent South Africa at the joint Congress and General Assemblies of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design in Glasgow, Scotland
  • Ingrid Templer and Des Laubscher visit Nottingham to start liaising with the Department of Design at Nottingham Trent University with the aim for them to validate courses at Greenside Design Center
  • Ingrid Templer is appointed as Education Officer to the South African Society of Designers
  • Des Laubscher presents a paper at the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers Biennial Congress in Glasgow, Scotland entitled: “Design for Developing Countries- the Rainbow People

  • Des Laubscher is voted onto the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers Board at the General Assembly of IFI in Nagoya Japan
  • Lucia Gorgolione wins the PFG Building Glass Visions Interior Design Competition. Special Merit Awards are given to Colleen Delaney, Denis Marokefalos, Gavin Mc Luskie and Patricia Terry
  • Annelie Mathiesen wins the PG Bison Student of the Year Award
  • Karen Jansen Van Vuuren wins the Z Display Exhibition Design Award
  • Des Laubscher together with Ingrid Templer presents and wins the bid at the IFI General Assembly to host the 2001 IFI Congress and General Assembly in South Africa in 2001

  • Christine Raftopoulos is a finalist in the International Design Conference SA 2001 Logo Type Design – Continental Shift

  • Tamara Lieberthal wins the PG Bison Student of the Year Award
  • Robin Turner is a finalist in the Nagoya, Japan Design Foundation Award for his work entitled “Greeting”
  • Samantha Mallic, Claudia Folgore and Natasha Fontes are finalists in the Gauloises Freedom Always Graphic Design Competition
  • Ingrid Templer and Des Laubscher represent South Africa at the IFI General Assembly and Conference
  • Des Laubscher is appointed President Elect of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers at the General Assembly of the IFI in Dublin, Ireland
  • Des Laubscher is invited to join the Board of Design for the World, Barcelona, Spain
  • Greenside Design Center becomes the first design institution in the Southern Hemisphere to become an education member of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers

1998

  • Robin Turner and Keith Kearney win a Gold Award at the SAPPI Design Awards
  • Greenside Design Center launches and completes its first Community Design Project in Etwatwa, Daveyton, at the W.J. Mpengesi Primary School This project is a forerunner to many community projects undertaken by the centre
  • Greenside Design Center is chosen by the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers to pilot Design for Life projects together with institutions from the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Brazil and India. These projects are presented at the IFI General Assembly and Conference in Sydney 1999  
  • Des Laubscher presents a paper in Guanajuato, Mexico, at the 1st National Symposium of Interior Designers “Horizons that Converge”, entitled: “Design and Humanity – Looking to Answers for the 21st Century”
  • Des Laubscher presents a paper for the Danish Designers at the Bella Center, Copenhagen, Denmark, entitled: “Nordic Spaces viewed from the South”
1987

1999

  • Ingrid Templer is invited by the Korean Society of Interior Designers to present a paper and lead a design workshop in Seoul. The workshop, endorsed by IFI, is structured to encourage future leaders in the discipline of interior design to get together and share knowledge. The workshop, entitled WING, World Interiors for the Next Generation, attracts young designers from around the world to attend and they are tutored by renowned designers from all corners of the planet.
  • Ingrid Templer also presents a paper at the WING Workshop entitled “Form, Texture, Pattern”
  • Des Laubscher becomes President of the International Federation of Interior Architects/designers at the General Assembly of IFI in Sydney, Australia
  • Tiffany Turkington, the Head of Department for Graphic Design, presents a paper at Sydney ’99 and is elected to the board of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations
  • Ingrid Templer and Des Laubscher represent South Africa at the International Federation Interior Architects/Designers General Assembly and Congress in Sydney, Australia
  • Des Laubscher presents a paper in Tokyo, Japan, entitled: “Design for the World – Use of the Safety Syringe as Prevention to Aids Contamination” at the Japanese Institute of Design Symposium

  • Des Laubscher delivers the Keynote Address at the World Conference on Environmental Design for the New Millennium in Seoul, Korea. He is also involved in a debate on the topic with panel members Robert Stern, Mario Botta, Michael Graves, Charles Correa, among others
  • Des Laubscher presents the Keynote Address at the Asia Pacific Design Association Congress entitled Humanising Space, in Bali
  • Greenside Design Center, Pretoria University and the University of Johannesburg host a World Interiors Next Generation (WING) International Design Workshop in Plettenberg Bay
  • The full boards of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations and the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers conduct a story telling workshop at the W.J. Mpengesi Primary School, Etwatwa, Daveyton, hosted by Greenside Design Center
  • Des Laubscher appointed Juror for the Hong Kong Chapter of the Chinese Interior Design Association’s Professional Excellence Award
  • Des Laubscher presents a paper in Sao Paulo, Brazil entitled: “South African Design in a Global Context” at the Biennial Interior Design Congress staged at the World Trade Centre

  • Darren Bester wins the PG Bison Student of the Year Award
  • Des Laubscher is given honorary membership to the European Council of Interior Architects
  • Greenside Design Center becomes the first design education institution worldwide to win the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers Socially Responsible Design Award for its work on the Zimpeto Mission Project in Mozambique
  • Des Laubscher wins the DSA Presidents Award for his lifelong commitment to promoting excellence in design in South Africa and abroad
  • Ingrid Templer, in conjunction with Kinuko Nakagawa from Japan and marianne Frandsen from Denmark presents a paper entitled “North, South, East…” at the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers Conference in Johannesburg
  • Des Laubscher appointed visiting Professor of Design at Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, UK, in recognition of international work in the field of socially responsible design. Refereed by top interior architects from five countries globally. They were from Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and Korea.
  • Des Laubscher appointed External Examiner for ICS, College of Arts, Tokyo, Japan, degree students, for a four year tenure
  • Des Laubscher appointed Juror for the Asia Pacific Annual Interior Design Awards, Hong Kong, China
  • Des Laubscher appointed as a Juror for the 10th International Design Competition, Osaka, Japan. Organised by the Japan Design Foundation, this competition is regarded as one of the most prestigious design competition’s in the world

  • Des Laubscher Chairs the Jury for the Marksman Design Awards in Amsterdam, Holland
  • Des Laubscher is appointed as a Fellow of Design for the World, Barcelona, Spain.
  • Des Laubscher appointed Juror for the Annual Interior Design Awards for the Korean Society of Interior Designs, Seoul, Korea
  • Greenside Design Center staff and students, together with Nicolas de Klerk and his staff, design and build the “Beautiful Things Hand Made In South Africa” exhibition at the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development, Wanderers, Johannesburg, for the Department of Arts and Culture
  • Quentin Duncan and Onica Lekuntwane sit and pass the International Society of Type Designers Examination. Thus becoming the first students in the Southern Hemisphere to become members of this prestigious society
  • Des Laubscher presents a paper at Nottingham Trent University, England, entitled: “Design Without Common Wealth – Design in the Humane Village”

  • Des Laubscher is appointed Juror for the IFI Design to Improve Life International Awards Mumbai, India and Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Quentin Duncan wins Loerie Award
  • Melanie Cameron sits and passes the International Society of Type Designers Examination
  • Des Laubscher represents South Africa at the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers General Assembly and Congress in Pune and Mumbai, India. He receives the Presidents Award for his continued commitment and contribution to the federation

  • Mercia Scheepers wins the Elle Décor Solve Student Design Competition. Greenside Design Center produces four finalists and two of the winners for this competition
  • Jacque Middleton and Emma Laubscher sit and pass the International Society of Type Designers Examination

  • Ellena Craparo, Kelly Hughes, Lucky Rantsimane and Bornwell Nelson win Loerie Awards for the SAPPI Ideas That Matter Competition
  • Ingrid Templer and Des Laubscher present a paper entitled “Democritising Public Space in a Post Apartheid South Africa” at the World Design Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Des Laubscher represents South Africa at the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers General Assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Greenside Design Center is chosen as one of seven design schools worldwide by INDEX 05 in Copenhagen, Denmark, to participate in a global design event entitled “Design to Improve Life”. Greenside Design Center represents the continent of Africa.
  • Andrea Kleinloog wins the PG Bison Student of the Year Competition

  • Ray Whitcher and Kelly Williams are D&AD finalists for their website design, Corbis
  • Des Laubscher, in partnership with the Dutch Consulate, the Independent Development Trust and BNO, the Dutch Professional Design Association, initiated DUTCHMATCH, which ultimately leads to fourteen South African designers going to Holland for skills development training through JIPSA, initiated by the Deputy Presidents Office

2007

  • Greenside Design Center becomes a Founding Member of the South African Institute of the Interior Design Professions
  • Des Laubscher curates an exhibition of South African design entitled NEWAFRICA, which is exhibited in Copenhagen, Denmark. Onica Lekuntwane is chosen to exhibit some of her illustrations on this exhibition and attends the opening of the exhibition and the INDEX Summer Camp
  • Greenside Design Center is once again invited to participate in INDEX, Copenhagen, Denmark. Honours students Robyn Penhall and Leungo Tumedi attended a three week Summer Camp and work with students from Denmark, Jordan, Qatar, South Korea, Spain, USA, Italy, Canada, Holland and Sweden to create design solutions to improve life
  • Ivor Templer goes to Nottingham Trent University and Guillermo Garma Montiel comes to Greenside Design Center in a lecturer exchange programme
  • Greenside Design Center is accepted as a member of Cumulus, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. Cumulus is an organization of art and design institutions focusing on current global debates on research, professional practice and higher education in art and design. Greenside Design Center is the only member of Cumulus in Africa, which has a worldwide membership of 140 institutions.
  • Des Laubscher represents South Africa at the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers in Busan, Korea General Assembly and Conference and is appointed Chair of the Jury  for the IFI Design Excellence Awards 2007
  • Des Laubscher elected President of the newly formed South African Institute of the Interior Design Professions

2008

  • Greenside Design Center signs the Kyoto Design Declaration with Cumulus. This is a statement of commitment by the members of Cumulus to sharing the global responsibility for building sustainable, human centered, creative societies
  • Matthew Holley wins the Escom Energy Efficient Lighting Competition and Salona Kassen is runner up in the same competition
  • Greenside Design Center sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Kolding Design School in Denmark, to promote lecturer and student exchanges
  • Des Laubscher and Ingrid Templer attend the Annual Conference and General Assembly of Cumulus in Zurich, Switzerland, and successfully bid to host the Cumulus Conference in South Africa in 2013

  • Sheena Edwards, Aslam Mohammed and Mphela Mamabolo attend a Master Class Design Camp entitled Vision 2020 at the invitation of Kolding Design School in Denmark
  • Cecil Cameron wins the Lefarge Design Excellence Award
  • Greenside Design Center wins the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers IFI Design for All Award. This award recognizes excellence in design that is in service of humanity. The award is given for our 10% Community Engagement Project
  • Ingrid Templer presents a paper the International Conference of the Inclusive Museum in Brisbane, Australia, entitled “New media Interactivity in the Museum - Democritisation or Dumbing Down

  • Ingrid Templer receives an International Award for Excellence for the top ranked article, 2009, from the International Journal of the Inclusive Museum in Istanbul, Turkey
  • Marina Muscardin is one of eight finalists for an international design competition organized by The Lumec, “Fondation Concept Lumiere Urbaine” (CLU) Montréal, Canada. The theme for this years competition is Street Furniture Light. The CLU Foundation receives entries from 34 countries which transformed this initiative into a truly global competition
  • Greenside Design Center now has 41 staff members, 368 students, occupies 1800 square metres of office and studio space, has two residences for foreign and out of town students and a VIP suite for visiting lectures  …….. a far cry from 1987!
